Our visit to the German Historical Museum in Berlin allowed us time to explore the museum on our own as well as have a guided tour through the part of the museum allotted to Germany from the year 1918 to 1945. Our assignment for the day was to find two topics that we learned about in Search that were each from different centuries. The first Search topic I came across is the image to the left, Martin Luther's translated New Testament. In the 16th century, Martin Luther realized that the Word of the Bible should be at the center of Catholicism. Because he believed that the Bible was the only known knowledge of God on Earth, he thought that it should be accessible to all, so he translated it from Latin to German. This translation played a large part in increasing literacy in the population as people could now read the Bible for themselves, without being dependent on priests to translate. |
In the 19th century, Karl Marx responded to the exploitation of laborers and lack of regulation in the workplace with his Communist Manifesto which addressed workers alienation from nature. In the photo to the right, a man is speaking to a group of laborers about socialism. There is a statue bust of Karl Marx in the back as well as uniformed police who are looking out for hostility toward the state.
